Is Romance in books unrealistic?

the notebook

Today I get to witness my grandbig* marry her best friend (her boyfriend since 6th grade).  Seeing them together always reminds me that true love does exist and even gives me hope that we all have a soul mate.  But while I've dated a lot in high school and college I kind of gave up on trying to find love when I moved home after graduating.  This past year I started reading lots of YA -the Hunger Games was my gateway to YA.  And I started to look at how love was portrayed in these YA books.  I made lots of observations and would like to share how I think YA books (and even adult fiction) are very unrealistic in the love department.  We maybe not be reading fairy tales like Cinderella every night before bed, but are we reading books that are setting us up for unrealistic expectations and disappointment?

This was supposed to be the best summer of Maggie’s life. Now it’s the one she’d do anything to forget.

Maggie Reynolds remembers hanging out at the gorge with her closest friends after a blowout party the night before. She remembers climbing the trail hand in hand with her perfect boyfriend, Joey. She remembers that last kiss, soft, lingering, and meant to reassure her. So why can’t she remember what happened in the moment before they were supposed to dive? Why was she left cowering at the top of the cliff, while Joey floated in the water below—dead?

Top Ten Books I'd Recommend As Good Beach Reads
I'm only going to do five since some of them are series.

Beach Blondes: June Dreams, July's Promise, August Magic (Summer)Tan Lines: Sand, Surf, and Secrets; Rays, Romance, and Rivalry; Beaches, Boys, and Betrayal (Summer)
1. Beach Blondes/ Tan Lines by

The covers don't do this series justice.  It is such a great beach read since that's where it takes place.  It's got hot boys, strong friendships, romance, deceit, and some big surprises.

Armchair BEA: Monetizing Your Blog

Day 4 Topic: Monetizing Your Blog

My dad is full of such good ideas.  A little while after he suggested starting a blog he said I should find a way to monetize it.  So I started using Adsense thinking I'd make some money on it.  I did...like $1.50.  I can't even buy gum with that.  I ended up moving my advertisements to the bottom of the page because they had nothing to do with books and just looked annoying.

Day 2 Topic: Best Books that were released in 2012 that I have read.

This has been a great year in books so far!  What have you read (that was released in 2012) that you think I should read?

Armchair BEA: Introduction Interview

Photo from: Emily's Reading Room

Thanks for stopping by Harley Bear Book Blog!  I'm so excited to be participating in Armchair BEA this year!  Let's get started...Here are my five interview questions.

1. Please tell us a little bit about yourself: Who are you? How long have you been blogging? Why did you get into blogging?

Hey everyone. My name is Melissa, I'm 22, and I'm a bookaholic. I've been blogging about books for three months now and love it! Surprisingly, I didn't know the book blogging world existed until after I set up a twitter account for my blog.

A few months ago I found I had a lot more free time on my hands.  My dad suggested I start a blog about books.  I didn't think I would actually keep up with it, but ended up loving blogging almost as much as actually reading!  Now I have somewhere to talk about books with other people who are equally obsessed with books.  Makes me feel more normal when I'm swooning over my book boyfriends characters to know that others are too.
