From Goodreads:
A virus that had once been contained has returned, and soon no place will be left untouched by its destruction. But when Cheyenne wakes up in Elysian Fields--a subdivision cut off from the world and its monster-creating virus--she is thrilled to have a chance at survival.

At first, Elysian Fields, with its beautiful houses and manicured lawns, is perfect. Teo Richardson, the older man who stole Cheyenne's heart, built it so they could be together. But when Teo tells Cheyenne there are tests that she and seven other couples must pass to be worthy of salvation, Cheyenne begins to question the perfection of his world.

The people they were before are gone. Cheyenne is now "Persephone," and each couple has been re-named to reflect the most tragic romances ever told. Everyone is fighting to pass the test, to remain in Elysian Fields. Teo dresses them up, tells them when to move and how to act, and in order to pass the test, they must play along.

If they play it right, then they'll be safe.

But if they play it wrong, they'll die.

I won't lie.  My first thought about rating this was one star.  But after really thinking about what I didn't like in this story I could only come up with one thing that would push me to rate it one star.  And that is the main character Cheyenne.  Oh how I wanted to shake her into reality.

Cheyenne had Bella Syndrome.  She's blindly in love and doesn't care about anyone else except her lover.  When she's kidnapped she's not concerned that he used chloroform on her.  When he pushes her she thinks she deserves it.  She doesn't even care about her mom dying from the virus or being eaten alive.  And sadly, I could go on.  I thought once she realized Teo was a bad person she'd stop liking him.  But no.  He still gave her the tingly swoons.  And I could have respected her if she still cared about him after he shows his true colors.  I mean they did sort of date(ish) for a year so of course she would want him to get better right?  Wrong.  She doesn't care about him at all, but yet she still wants to make babies with him.  Oh and now she wants to make babies with another character too. On top of that, the world has ended and all she can think about is who she wants to kiss more.  I tend to like character development more than plot development so when I don't like a character it makes me not like the book.  So while I recognize Cheyenne had to have these flaws for there to be conflict in the plot I just couldn't get past her personality.

If Cheyenne hadn't been the main character I think I would have rated this four or five stars.  The plot was phenomenal.  The idea of each couple being a tragic literary couple was brilliance.  I loved watching their stories unfold like the original stories.  Zombies were reinvented in this story and the world was really creepy.  The only complaint I have is that the ending felt really rushed and like it was too convenient how it all wrapped up.  [Highlight for spoiler] plus why wouldn't their parents try to save them?  That didn't seem realistic.

Marcus was another part of the book that made me want to rate this higher.  He had a lot of layers and was sweet.  It was awesome to see the nice guy getting some attention for once (even if it's only after the hot one turns evil).  And he seemed realistic.  He had some skeletons in his closet.

What I really loved was Teo.  He was so sick and twisted and unlike any other villain I've ever read.  I didn't love him like I love Warner from Shatter Me.  But it's more I was just shocked by his pure evilness.  Literally no character was safe from Teo's wrath and the anticipation and suspense of who he would attack next kept me on the edge of my seat.

31 Days of Halloween Recap

I finally finished up my Halloween Readathon!  It wasn't too scary, but some books definitely creeped me out.  Also, I don't suggest seeing Sinister as it made me have to sleep with the TV on for two nights!

Have you read any scary books this holiday season.

SHHHH!
Don't spread the word!
Three-day weekend. House party.
White Rock House on Henry Island.
You do NOT want to miss it.

It was supposed to be the weekend of their lives—an exclusive house party on Henry Island. Best friends Meg and Minnie each have their reasons for being there (which involve T.J., the school’s most eligible bachelor) and look forward to three glorious days of boys, booze and fun-filled luxury.

But what they expect is definitely not what they get, and what starts out as fun turns dark and twisted after the discovery of a DVD with a sinister message: Vengeance is mine.

Suddenly people are dying, and with a storm raging, the teens are cut off from the outside world. No electricity, no phones, no internet, and a ferry that isn’t scheduled to return for two days. As the deaths become more violent and the teens turn on each other, can Meg find the killer before more people die? Or is the killer closer to her than she could ever imagine?

I've been using a new way of reviewing that I saw over at Making the Grade.  It breaks the book down and makes it easier to rate.  The way it works is each category gets a score out of ten points.  Then you add them all up + 50 (50% automatically for each book) and that's your score out of 100.

Plot 7/10: Usually in mysteries I figure out who the killer is before it's revealed.  This one I was completely surprised although I probably shouldn't have been.  I loved the realistic-ness of it (besides the part about teens being on an island alone).  It was thoroughly creepy for a YA book.  It reminds me of Lord of the Flies and that poem Ten Little Indians.

Characters 6/10: The main character was so protective of her best friend that she put her own needs aside which really bothered me after awhile.  It's one thing to be loyal and another to be a complete pushover.  Eventually she grows a backbone, but it takes like the whole book for that to happen.  Her friend was annoying and needy.  TJ kept me guessing.  I didn't know what to think of his character.  The other kids were kind of stereotypical.  I kind of wished they had more depth.

Setting 8/10: It was very creepy in this mansion on a deserted island.  The descriptions gave me chills.  However, I just can't see this happening in the real world.  I mean are there even islands out there with two mansions on them and nothing else?  Other than that it was a great setting that made the whole atmosphere of the book work.

Pacing 8/10: Once the murders started the pacing was so fast and the ending was crazy fast.  So much happened in the last few chapters!

Style 7/10: I want to read this author's other book now.  She keeps you on the edge of your seat.  Her book was creepy, but not "leave the light on" scary.  I think I finished it in a day.

Final Thoughts: If you're looking for a book to read before halloween this is definitely a good one to try.  See if you can figure out the mystery first!
Total: 86/100

Mini Hiatus over

The past two weeks I have been so sick it has been terrible, but I'm finally feeling better.  First it was just a cold, so everyday after work I'd come home and lay down.  Then last Monday I got a stomach virus.  I was so sick that I didn't even pick up a book or my computer for days.  That's when you know something's wrong with me lol.  But I've been feeling a lot better now so I'm going to try to get back on track with posts this week.  Sorry for disappearing for a week!
