Top Ten Tuesday #25

This Week's List:
May 21: Top Ten Favorite Covers of Books I've Read

As you can see I'm more partial to blues for some reason.  I like cooler colors and girls in pretty dresses.  I had done a TTT on my favorite underwater covers recently.  I also did a post of YA Rainbow Covers of 2013 if you want to check those out.  Some of the above I loved the covers, but didn't really like the book.

Random Thoughts Thursday: YA Reading Rainbow: 2013 Covers

Cover Art Trends in 2013
We all know I'm a teensy bit obsessed with cover art.  I buy books sometimes because I love the cover and then proceed to pet that pretty cover...just kidding sort of.  Well, one day while on goodreads I wondered what trends were popular for 2013 YA covers and decided to put this together.  I think it's safe to say black and white covers with Red font is popular.  Also, surprisingly yellow is pretty popular as well.  My favorite of course is the green column.  And while I hate to encourage it, I really like some of the black covers.  I think the white are kind of boring though.  They don't catch my eye in stores at all.

Did I miss any good covers?  What is your favorite column?

That Awkward Thursday #3

Hosted by Wholly Books

April 25: That awkward moment when you love the book, but hate the cover.

Before blogging I never knew what to read next.  I was desperate for suggestions like a mouse scrounging for crumbs.  So when my roommate took a book out from under her messy bed and said "here read this" I decided what the heck.

The cover looked stupid and the title sounded ridiculous.  It looked to me like Laguna Beach which I never had any desire to watch.  But like I said, I was desperate so I tried it.  And let me tell you, that cover deceives.  The book has nothing to do with six girls being friends taking a picture on a beach.  In fact, there's only like three girls in the whole book...none of which are blonde.  I also hate that the title makes it sound like they're "dumb blondes".  But it was a fantastic summer read surprisingly.  It's one that I reread every summer just because I like it that much.

Covers are such important parts of determining if we are going to try a book.  It seems when one book becomes a best seller all other covers try to mimic them.  Some trends:
*Twilightish: solid color with one object
*Girl in a pretty dress
*Girl with no head
*New Adult: Girl and Guy half naked doing something scandalous

Sometimes I see these trends and they make me not want to pick up the book (unless...lets be honest...if the dress is really pretty like The Selection I'll read it anyway).  I just feel like since the cover is nothing unique the content won't be either.

Have you ever been surprised by a book with an ugly cover?
What trends turn you off to a book?

Top Ten Tuesday #23

April 16:
Top Ten Favorite Covers
(23)

This week we got to pick an old topic we missed so I of course picked Favorite Covers.  As I started picking out my favorites, I realized most of my picks were underwater!  So I'm doing a favorite underwater covers this week instead.  I think I like them because they are weightless and flowing.  And I love shades of blue and green!

What topic did you choose this week?

Hi, My Name Is Melissa And I'm A Cover Snob...HELP!

Sometimes at the store or library I pick up a book off the shelf.  The first thing I notice is the cover.  Sometimes I'm really not attracted to a cover at all or it doesn't tell anything about what the book is about.  And I'm like...

And 9 times out of 10 I'll put it back on the shelf.  So basically I'm a cover snob.  If the cover is pretty or interesting I'll probably read it even if I've heard it's bad (ex. Where I Belong).

While checking out other people's Waiting on Wednesday posts I realized a lot of the books I would have passed by (because of their cover) actually had interesting summaries.

So I'm posting a list of books I don't want to read because of their cover and I need YOU to tell me if you think I'm making a mistake by passing them up.

This one has pretty colors, but it kind of gives me a headache to look at.  And I've seen this cover 100 times and just realized that's a girls face.  I hear everyone raving about it though.  Is it really that good?

This cover reminds me too much of Harry Potter which annoys me and it looks like a young kids book, which I think it's Middle School right?  But I've had countless people tell me it's amazing including my hot 34 yr old physical therapist and my aunt....soooo..

I don't know what it is about this cover.  Maybe it's the colors that turn me off or the scary thing she's holding in her hand.  I'm really not sure, but it's supposedly a good book.

This girl's hair really bothers me and I don't know why.  It kind of freaks me out to be honest.  But should I let my weirdness stop me from picking up this book?

I think this one looks very manly and that's probably what turns me off to it.  Plus I read Daughter of Smoke and Bone and The Book of Blood And Shadow so this title just doesn't do it for me.  But people were freaking out over this book so maybe it's worth it?

I hate the thing reflected in the girl's head.  What is that?  And there's no color or anything that stands out.

Most of these books so far have no color on the cover.  Maybe that's my problem!  But this one kind of creeps me out.  I feel like that girl is staring into my soul.

What books have you read that have a weird or ugly cover that you really enjoyed?  Or do you need help deciding on a book?
