Review: The Secret Sisterhood of Heartbreakers by: Lynn Weingarten

Title: The Secret Sisterhood of Heartbreakers

Author: Lynn Weingarten

  • Publisher: HarperTeen

  • Publication date: December 27, 2011

  • # Of Pages: 352 Hardcover

  • How I got the copies: Library

My Rating: 3/5 Stars

  • Goodreads/B&N/Amazon
    Goodreads Summary:
If there’s an upside to having your heart broken, it’s this: A broken heart makes you brave. The first day of sophomore year doesn’t go the way Lucy planned. After a summer apart from her boyfriend, she’s ready to greet him with a special surprise and instead gets a shocking one in return: He’s breaking up with her. Beyond devastated, Lucy has no idea how she’s going to make it through homeroom, let alone the rest of her life. Enter three stunning girls with the unnatural ability to attract boys and an offer Lucy can’t refuse: They can heal her heart in an instant. And then she’ll be one of them—a member of a sisterhood that is impervious to heartbreak and has access to magic distilled from the tears of brokenhearted boys. But to gain their power, Lucy must get a guy to fall in love with her the old-fashioned way, and then break his heart in the next seven days. While the sisterhood may need another Heartbreaker, Lucy’s only desire is to get her ex back. But how far is she willing to go, and who is she willing to cross to get what she wants?

    My Review:
    þFun concept/plot
    þColorful characters
This book was not what I expected, and unfortunately I mean that in a bad way.  I thought this book would be about a girl who has to make a guy fall in love with her to get magic to protect her heart and along the way she would really fall for him in return.  I thought it would be a YA love story, but I was wrong.  Instead the message I took away was: It's better to have never loved at all than to have loved and lost.  And also self confidence matters more than looks to boys.  I'm not sure I agree with either of those statements, but I did appreciate the  female empowerment the author tried to communicate.  I don't think relationships should be a power struggle though.  Relationships should be equal.  But I digress.

Review: Paradise Series by: Simone Elkeles

Title: Leaving Paradise & Return to Paradise

Author:
Simone Elkeles

  • Publisher: Flux

  • Publication date: April 1, 2007 & September 1, 2010

  • # Of Pages: 303 Paperback

  • How I got the copies: Library

My Rating: 5/5 Stars
  • My quick summary of this series:
It's one year after the accident and Caleb is just getting out of Jail.  He returns home to find out that everyone has changed.  His hometown, Paradise, seems exactly the opposite, more of a hell.  Maggie was the victim of the accident or so she likes to think.  She was the one Caleb hit with his car on that fateful night.  Can she get over the fact that she will forever have a limp?  And will she ever be able to forgive Caleb?  As the two reunite for the first time in a year the strangest thing happens.  They begin to fall for each other.

Return to Paradise involves a "camping" trip for teens affected by destructive driving and a guess who both end up on this trip?  Maggie and Caleb haven't spoken in a while and now they will spend the next few weeks in close quarters sharing their story of the accident with other teens.  Find out what happens when the truth starts to slip out causing chaos.

    My Review:
    þSizzling Romance
    þSerious Issues discussed
    þComedy
I read both of these books in one day which is why I thought it was fitting to put them as one review, and because I am too lazy to make two separate reviews.  Anyway, I LOVED this series to put it simply.  The characters were feisty and filled with teenage angst.  They had entertaining passion and lust.  The plot was unlike anything I had read before.  Usually the male lead in YA books is a cookiecutter guy next door type so it was fun to fall for the bad boy for once.  I loved that there was a secret that hung in the air the whole book that only the reader and Caleb knew about which threatened to reek havoc and any moment.

Weekly Event: Musing Mondays (#3)

This picture was taken last year at the Today show in NYC.  My fellow sisters of Alpha Xi Delta and I had gotten up at 4 am to drive to the city and spread Autism Awareness. (I'm to the left of the girl holding the sign of the the Today logo).

April 2 is Autism Awareness Day.  Help spread the word so the millions affected by Autism can find hope in research of the causes, types of prevention, and a cure.

Now for my regular Monday post:
She posts a question each Monday for bloggers who are participating in this meme and we answer them.My previous Monday posts

This week's musing asks:
Do you belong to any book clubs- face to face or online?
If so, how long have you been with the group(s).
I have been a member of goodreads.com for a few months now.  I joined two groups there and have been an active member ever since.  Each month both groups pick a Book of the Month for us to read and discuss.  The one group has a Theme of the Month (April is Angels and Demons).  I absolutely love it.  We participate when we have time and we never meet in person so there's no hassle scheduling time to meet.  Everyone is enthusiastic about books and we always have lots to talk about.  We even have creative writing competitions, games, and non book related chats.  If you don't belong to goodreads yet you should check it out.

Are you in any book clubs?  If you are in a face to face club how did you find it?
