{Blog Tour Stop}{Review} Last Summer by Rebecca Rogers

 Title: Last Summer
Author: Rebecca Rogers
Number of Pgs. 240
Publication date: July 18, 2012
Genre: New Adult
How I got the copy: From the author in exchange for an honest review.

From Goodreads:
All Chloe Sullivan wants to do is get through the summer.  Her life has been in disarray for more than six months, and she knows the only reason her parents made one final trip to Sandy Shores is because of her.  They are, after all, two seconds away from filing for divorce.  When Chloe stumbles upon a boy in one of her childhood hangouts, she's in for more than just a relaxing summer vacation.

Logan Andrews is exhausted, famished, and quite frankly, kaput.  His parents kicked him out when he refused to attend a rehabilitation program for his drug addiction.  Now, he wishes he would have listened; he'd be receiving appropriate medical care rather than living in a dingy, godforsaken shack, holing up from money-hungry drug dealers.

Logan's godsend arrives in the form of Chloe, who can't hold her tongue when it comes to matters of the heart.  They're both in for a rude awakening when Logan's past catches up to them, though.  Can they escape the drug dealers showing up at every twist and turn, or will things end much worse then they ever imagined?

Warning: Contains strong language, drug use, and sexual situations, including an explicit sex scene and a near-rape scene.  Mature audiences only. 17+

 Quick read-couldn't put down
-  Characters deal with tough problems like drugs, divorce, murder, etc.
-  A romance that will melt your heart

I can't believe this book was self published because everything about it was professional.  The cover is fantastic, the writing is amazing, and overall I'm just not sure why it wasn't picked up by a publisher...or even a producer.  This book was definitely emotional enough to be a movie.

You all know I love action and romance, but my favorite part was the characters themselves.  They all had depth.  Chloe's parents are going through the first stages of a divorce and she's kind of alone in life because of it. I kept asking myself why would Chloe feel so strongly about helping this kid recover from drugs?  What's in it for her.  And it finally made sense that she has no one really, Logan was a good distraction, and she has a good heart.  But also sometimes when everything in our lives are a mess, we feel like if we can just accomplish one thing then everything else will be okay.  And Logan was Chloe's one thing to fix.  Most novels show the men as strong, manly, and saving the damsel in distress.  But I liked that for once the characters were saving each other.  It wasn't one sided.  And we saw weakness and vulnerability in the guy.  It felt so real.  And the romance especially felt real.

Although some things seemed far fetched (I can't say what without there being spoilers-mostly how the parents reacted to things), it didn't matter because I liked the characters that much that I didn't care.  I'm so happy how the book ends and I'm glad the author tied up some loose ends.  I like that everything that led to them meeting was fate.  I believe that everything happens for a reason.

If you like contemps that touch on tough topics and you aren't offended by cursing, sex, and drugs then you should definitely get this book.

{Review} Intangible by J. Meyers

Title: Intangible
Author: J. Meyers
Publication date: January 31, 2012
How I got the copy: From author in an exchange for an honest review.

From Goodreads:

Twins Sera and Luke Raine have a well-kept secret- she heals with a touch of her hand, he sees the future.  All their lives they've helped those in need on the sly.  They've always thought of their abilities as being a gift.

Then Luke has a vision that Sera is killed.  That gift they've always cherished begins to feel an awful lot like a curse.  Because the thing about Luke's ability?  He's always right.  And he can't do anything about it.

 Multiple POVs
-  Mythical creatures with abilities
-  Action, Romance, Humor, and more.

First, I want to thank J. Meyers for providing me with a copy of Intangible for review.  I'm sorry it took me so long to get to it.

Intangible is different from any other YA book I've read.  The characters are really mature and dealing with big problems, like how to stop the future from happening.  I loved that they were not typical mythical creatures (although there were some vampires and faeries).  The twins had powers to heal and see visions.  They don't know why they have these powers.

Each chapter was told from a different point of view.  I've only read books where there are two point of views, but this one had at least four, if not more.  I actually really liked it.  J. Meyer was able to give a unique personality to each character and bring them to life through their actions, thoughts, and dialogue.  I never got confused with who was narrating.  Sera and Luke had a fun, entertaining, brother/sister relationship.  Marc, Jonas, and Fey always kept me wondering if I could trust them.

I think I would have read this book in a day if it hadn't been for the pacing in the middle of the book.  The beginning and ending are full of action which I read really quickly.  In the middle, when the characters are meeting each other and getting to know each other, it was a little slow for me.  It was necessary at times because we needed to go on the journey with Sera and Luke to discover who they were and where they came from.  But at times I felt myself skimming some of the descriptions.  The parts that were full of action had my undivided attention though.

Bout of Books 5.0

I have so many books that need to be read before next week and it just so happens that Bout Of Books 6.0 is going on right now!  Starting today.  So I decided to try it for the first time.

Bout of Books Read-a-Thon
The Bout of Books read-a-thon is organized by Amanda @ On a Book Bender and Kelly @ Reading the Paranormal.  It is a week long read-a-thon that begins 12:01am Monday, August 13th and runs through Sunday, August 19th in whatever time zone you are in.  Bout of Books is low-pressure, and the only reading competition is between you and your usual number of books read in a week.  There are challenges, giveaways, and a grand prize, but all of these are completely optional.  For all Bout of Books 5.0 information and updates, be sure to visit the Bout of Books blog.

{Review} Beautiful Disaster by Jamie McGuire

Title: Beautiful Disaster
Author: Jamie McGuire
Publisher: Jamie McGuire
Publication date: May 26, 2011
How I got the copy: Netgalley (In exchange for an honest review.  Thank You!)
 (4.5 there were a few things I didn't like)
The new Abby Abernathy is a good girl.  She doesn't drink or swear, and she has the appropriate percentage of cardigans in her wardrobe.  Abby believes she has enough distance between her and the darkness of her past, but when she arrives at college with her best friend, her path to a new beginning is quickly challenged by Eastern University's Walking One-Night Stand.

Travis Maddox, lean, cut, and covered in tattoos, is exactly what Abby needs-and wants- to avoid.  He spends his nights winning money in a floating fight ring, and his days as the ultimate college campus charmer.  Intrigued by Abby's resistance to his appeal, Travis tricks her into his daily life with a simple bet.  If he loses, he must remain abstinent for a month.  If Abby loses, she must live in Travis's apartment for the same amount of time.  Either way, Travis has no idea that he has met his match.

 Read in a day
-  Like a car crash...you want to look away, but you can't
-  New Adult Genre: Characters in college

From the summary, I thought the book would be all about the bet between Abby and Travis.  It's not.  The bet happens right away and halfway through the book the month of the bet is over.  The book is more about the two trying to date and how dysfunctional they are together, yet how they can't be apart.

I couldn't put this book down.  It was so fast paced and so much happened in one book.  The emotions were infectious; I felt like I was on the journey with Abby.  I think because I dated someone emotionally abusive like Travis, it really hit home.  I've been in that type of situation where you know you're not good with someone, but you're not ready to say goodbye yet.  Abby and Travis's relationship was like ten times worse than my experience though.  When they fought it was like an explosion going off.  Travis was scary when he was drunk and mad.  It almost made me mad that Abby still wanted him (even if she was pretending she didn't want him at times) after what he kept doing.  I think because Abby's childhood with her dad kind of being possessive and telling her she ruined his life she was kind of used to that verbal abuse and mistook it for love.  We tend to gravitate towards what we know...what is "comfortable".

I thought Abby's friends America and Sheply were enablers. When Abby wanted to run away from her problems instead of talking it out, America would give her a ride.  If they hadn't been there Travis and Abby would have had to work things out.  Finch, her friend, was really fun and I wish he had been in the book more.  What was he doing in all those scenes that he wasn't in?

We also never really know why Travis nicknames her Pidgeon, or Pidge.
