Teaser Tuesday #6

Miz B. from Should Be Reading

Each week bloggers share a few lines of the book they are currently reading.  No Spoilers please!

This week I'm reading to awesome books.  So I decided to share both =)  Enjoy!

"It's your fault you know."

"What?" I hear him frown. "Why?"

"My neck's been hurting ever since the wreck."

"I'm sorry." He slides my hair to one side, and I feel his soft breath behind my ear just before his lips touch my skin.  A sizzling charge shoots from my shoulder to my toes.

"Jason!" I spin around to face him, covering the spot with my hand.  "What are you doing?"

My heart's flying in my chest, and I can feel my cheeks turning pink.  I quickly scan the halls, but it doesn't look like anyone saw.

"We're not together anymore," I say.

He leans against the lockers and smiles at me like he knows his kiss felt amazing.  "We never were."

-The Truth About Faking by Leigh Talbert Moore

My review for this will be up tomorrow so don't forget to check back!

.

He moved so slowly, so deliberately, that if he'd been outside the veil, I'd have had him pinned to the ground with my elbow in his throat in less than a second.  But he was inside, with her, and he knew he could take his time.

He met my eyes, smiling, and executed one swift slice with his blade.

Across her throat.

Everything went quiet.

From Goodreads:

Being connected to Daemon Black sucks…

Thanks to his alien mojo, Daemon’s determined to prove what he feels for me is more than a product of our bizarro connection. So I’ve sworn him off, even though he’s running more hot than cold these days. But we’ve got bigger problems.

Something worse than the Arum has come to town…

The Department of Defense are here. If they ever find out what Daemon can do and that we're linked, I’m a goner. So is he. And there's this new boy in school who’s got a secret of his own. He knows what’s happened to me and he can help, but to do so, I have to lie to Daemon and stay away from him. Like that's possible. Against all common sense, I'm falling for Daemon. Hard.

But then everything changes…

I’ve seen someone who shouldn’t be alive. And I have to tell Daemon, even though I know he’s never going to stop searching until he gets the truth. What happened to his brother? Who betrayed him? And what does the DOD want from them—from me?

No one is who they seem. And not everyone will survive the lies…

I've been using a new way of reviewing that I saw over at Making the Grade.  It breaks the book down and makes it easier to rate.  The way it works is each category gets a score out of ten points.  Then you add them all up + 50 (50% automatically for each book) and that's your score out of 100.

Plot 10/10: This plot was way more involved than Obsidian (Lux #1), yet somehow J.L.A found a way to squeeze in some even hotter romance scenes.  I loved how it picked up right where the first book left.  Since Katy has some sort of powers now she has to learn to control them.  I loved her hot and cold relationship with Daemon.  J.L.A is a genius!

Characters 10/10: Katy changes yet again.  She's stronger which is great, but also more stubborn which that that gets her in more trouble.  She's still hilarious and easy to relate to.  Daemon is still smoking hot if not more so.  He's changed so much from book one, but in a good way.  He actually has emotions in this book.  And that is so sexy!  Blake is a new character and I couldn't tell if I should trust him.  I love characters like this because they always keep you on your toes.  He's a nice guy who likes Katy, but somehow I still loved Daemon's badass more.  This book also has the DOD (the government that monitors the aliens) and the Arum(enemies of the aliens like Daemon).  This made the book so much more interesting because they had to figure out what those two were up to.

Setting 10/10: This took place a lot at Katy's home and school, and a few other places around town, but I was okay with this being the only scenery.  It made it feel more like a contemporary novel than Sci Fi.  J.L.A makes a boring setting seem magical and exciting.

Pacing 10/10: It was the same as the first book where it's slow to start off, but halfway through the book it picks up speed.  The ending was just insane!  Again, I could not put this book down.  Read it in a day.

Style 10/10: This book had me laughing out loud.  I love Jennifer Armentrout's writing voice.  I love it so much I went out and bought three more of her books after reading Onyx!  She's possibly my new favorite author.  If you're going to read one of her books read this series first.  The writing is beautiful and steamy at the same time.

Final Thoughts: I didn't think it was possible to love a book more than Obsidian, but this one definitely topped it.  I'm dying over here waiting for Opal to come out in December.  After finishing the last word of Onyx I immediately considered rereading the first two books.  And I totally would have if I didn't have a huge stack of books on my shelf to read. I just finished Cursed by J.L.A and I reviewed that yesterday!
Total: 100/100

“Cookie?" he offered, holding a cookie full of chocolate chips.
Upset tummy or not, there was no way I could refuse that. "Sure."
His lips tipped up one side and he leaned toward me, his mouth inches from mine. "Come and get it."
Come and get...? Daemon placed half the cookie between those full, totally kissable lips.
Oh, holy alien babies everywhere...”

“We’re still going to be seeing each other,” he murmured. “And don’t even lie. I know that makes you happy, You told me you wanted me.”
Hold your horses. “When?”
“At the lake.” He slanted his headm and I should’ve pulled back. His lips curved knowingly against mine, and he let go of my wrist. “You said you wanted me.”
Both of my hand were on his chest. They had a mind of their own. I claimed no responsibility for them. “I had a fever. Lost my mind.”
“Whatever, Kitten.” Daemon gripped my hips, lifting me onto the edge of he desk with an ease that was disturbing. “I know better.”

{Review} Cursed by Jennifer L. Armentrout

From Goodreads:

Dying sucks-- and high school senior Ember McWilliams knows firsthand. After a fatal car accident, her gifted little sister brought her back. Now anything Ember touches dies. And that, well, really blows.

Ember operates on a no-touch policy with all living things--including boys. When Hayden Cromwell shows up, quoting Oscar Wilde and claiming her curse is a gift, she thinks he's a crazed cutie. But when he tells her he can help control it, she's more than interested. There's just one catch: Ember has to trust Hayden's adopted father, a man she's sure has sinister reasons for collecting children whose abilities even weird her out.

However, she's willing to do anything to hold her sister's hand again. And hell, she'd also like to be able to kiss Hayden. Who wouldn't? But when Ember learns the accident that turned her into a freak may not have been an accident at all, she's not sure who to trust. Someone wanted her dead, and the closer she gets to the truth, the closer she is to losing not only her heart, but her life. For real this time.

I've been using a new way of reviewing that I saw over at Making the Grade.  It breaks the book down and makes it easier to rate.  The way it works is each category gets a score out of ten points.  Then you add them all up + 50 (50% automatically for each book) and that's your score out of 100.

Plot 8/10: At first this plot seemed kind of predictable, like it had been done before.  Maybe that's because I love Shatter Me by Tareh Mafi and Cursed had a similar idea behind it.  The idea of not being able to touch another being without it dying (and also *SPOILER* the idea of a group of people with gifts living together and learning how to control it).  I did love how J.L.A. made this into more of a contemp type of novel with a touch of supernatural.  Also, the fact that Ember can't touch Hayden made the sexual tension so hot I was surprised the house didn't catch fire.

Characters 8/10: I was worried that the characters would be a lot like the Obsidian characters that I had just read, but they were very different.  The male lead, Hayden, was hot, but in a darker way.  Like you could tell he'd been through a hell of life.  And the mystery of his past made him that much more desirable.  Ember liked to wallow a lot about her curse, which was annoying at first, but I put myself in her shoes and realized I'd do the same thing.  And in her defense her life is uprooted and there's nothing she can do about it.  And she was really strong to have taken care of her sister the past two years.  Jonathan her new "father" is really creepy and I didn't trust him at all.  He was such a complex character.  The other gifted kids were entertaining and kind of reminded me of...dare I say it...the Cullens.  =X  Her sister Olivia is really creepy since she can bring back the dead.  I would be scared of her if I met her in real life.

Setting 8/10: The whole book took place in a town in West Virginia, just like Obsidian.  I wonder if she did that because that's where she's from.  I did enjoy the cabin in the woods were Hayden and Ember got a little steamy, but for the most part the scenery was kind of boring.

Pacing 10/10: Usually her books start out slow, but after a few chapters this book really took off.  I loved that because I hate when books take too long to get to the point.  The ending was crazy fast paced and full of action.

Style 10/10: I just love her writing.  She could write a book about nothing and I'd buy it.  She mixes humor, romance, and suspense all in one.  She wrote such raw emotions in this book my eyes were tearing the whole time.  If you've ever disliked yourself for even a minute you'll be able to relate with Ember and her pain.

Final Thoughts: This book wasn't as good as Obsidian, but it definitely was awesome.  I hope there is a second book because there were a few things that were left unexplained.  I was excited that I figured out who had caused the accident before it was revealed.  All that time spent watching shows like NCIS really paid off!  This book comes out tomorrow and I highly suggest you try it!

Stacking the Shelves/Sunday Post #13

STSmall_thumb[2]
The Sunday Post is a meme hosted by  Kimba the Caffeinated Book Reviewer.  Stacking The Shelves is hosted by Tynga's Reviews.  Both are a chance to share News. A post to recap the past week, showcase books and things we have received and talk about what is coming up for the week on our blog. Link up each week.  I will be doing Weekly Recap, What books I got that week, and a sneak peek of what to expect for the next week on my blog.

FROM THE LIBRARY, B&N, & Author

The Truth About Faking
I know I said I wasn't going to read any Indie books for awhile, but the author contacted me with a personal email (not a mass email lol) so I decided to check out the book.  It's actually really good so far.  I'm hoping to have a review for it by Wednesday.

Easy

After reading some reviews of this I'm really excited to read it.  It sounds dramatic!

Timepiece
This is weird, but one night I had a dream I was picking up Timepiece from a shelf.  The next day I went to the library and it was sitting right on the top shelf like in my dream.  I took that as a sign that I had to get it!

Half-Blood & Daimon

I am officially addicted to Jennifer Armentrout's books!  After devouring Obsidian and Onyx I quickly bought Half-Blood.  I finished reading Daimon and I'm excited to start this series.

Cursed

I already finished this one.  I had ordered it from B&N and then realized my address was entered wrong.  I was so worried it wouldn't get here, but it actually came before Easy and Half-Blood.  A week before it was even sold in stores!  I'll be reviewing this one tomorrow =)

Obsidian & Onyx

Obsidian and Onyx are two of the best books I've ever read.  I love Daemon.  Enough said.

WEEKLY RECAP

This week I finally settled into a schedule with this new job.  I would come home from work, write a post, and schedule it.  It was nice and relaxing.  I also got some pretty amazing books this wee!  It was my first time buying anything online from B&N.  I couldn't believe how fast they came in!

Last night I went to an Oktoberfest event in my town.  I was read to eat and drink German food and beer, but then I got a killer headache and ended up going home early.  I tried to go to sleep, but some neighbor was having a party and the band was so loud!  Even with my windows shut I could hear the words to Ride Sally Ride clear as day.  At least the lead singer had a good voice.
