Sunday Post/Stacking The Shelves #30

The Sunday Post is a meme hosted by  Kimba the Caffeinated Book Reviewer.  Stacking The Shelves is hosted by Tynga's Reviews.  Both are a chance to share News. A post to recap the past week, showcase books and things we have received and talk about what is coming up for the week on our blog.

Crash And Burn
This one just sounds so unique.  It's about a guy who stops someone from shooting up a school I think.  I like the cover too.

Code Name Verity
Soooo many people have raved about this one so I've started it already.  Have you read it?

Shadow And Bone
The cover of this one made me not want to read it, but I've been told it's amazing so I'm gonna try it out.

This week I devoured Wait For You in one day!  It's one of those books that I'll have to reread again soon.  Also, I'm participating in the
hosted by Kimba!  It's not too late to sign up.  All we're doing is reading books published before March 2013 so we can get a handle on those ginormous TBR piles we all have.  There's tweeting #TakeControlRAT going on and some mini challenges!

In the non bookish world I've been slowly getting better.  I'm going to see a wellness doctor soon to see what kinds of natural ways I can help heal my body without taking any more meds than I already have to.  And today I went for a dress fitting for my Maid of Honor dress.  So life is starting to finally look up for me.  Hopefully soon I can eat more foods again.  Eating just eggs and bread is getting very boring!

Genre: YA, Fantasy, Fairytale Retelling

From Goodreads:

This stunning debut captures the grotesque madness of a mystical under-land, as well as a girl’s pangs of first love and independence. Alyssa Gardner hears the whispers of bugs and flowers—precisely the affliction that landed her mother in a mental hospital years before. This family curse stretches back to her ancestor Alice Liddell, the real-life inspiration for Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Alyssa might be crazy, but she manages to keep it together. For now.
When her mother’s mental health takes a turn for the worse, Alyssa learns that what she thought was fiction is based in terrifying reality. The real Wonderland is a place far darker and more twisted than Lewis Carroll ever let on. There, Alyssa must pass a series of tests, including draining an ocean of Alice’s tears, waking the slumbering tea party, and subduing a vicious bandersnatch, to fix Alice’s mistakes and save her family. She must also decide whom to trust: Jeb, her gorgeous best friend and secret crush, or the sexy but suspicious Morpheus, her guide through Wonderland, who may have dark motives of his own.

Cover: Even after staring at this cover for months in anticipation, I still think it's gorgeous.  I love how all the colors pop.  Feels like it should be holographic or something.

After talking about how excited I was for this book for almost a full year...
I'm almost ashamed to admit it, but I almost DNFed this book.
Why you ask?  I was having trouble getting into the story.  The first half of the book was kind of slow and there was hardly any action.  I was confused because I thought I signed up for a book that took place in Wonderland and I didn't want to wait 100 pages to get there.  Once I got past the first half of the book I literally could not put it down.  I read the last 200 pages in one sitting and stayed up  late.  It wasn't until the last few chapters that I was incredibly hooked and decided I'd continue the series.  I havvveee to know who Alyssa decides to be with and what Wonderland holds in the future.

Alyssa was such a unique character.  She's more of a tomboy which you hardly ever see in YA, even books where the main character is kick ass.  Alyssa skateboards, blue highlights and dreadlocks her hair(is that even a verb?).  Once she's in Wonderland she has a pretty funky outfit that I plan to try to create for my next Passion for Bookish Fashion so keep an eye out for that.  It involves striped socks!  I found it hard to connect with her character though.  I think she didn't really have any layers.  Even though she was unique she was kind of bland.  Her character did really grow up and change which I enjoyed watching.

From Goodreads:

Some things are worth waiting for…
Traveling thousands of miles from home to enter college is the only way nineteen-year-old Avery Morgansten can escape what happened at the Halloween party five years ago—an event that forever changed her life. All she needs to do is make it to her classes on time, make sure the bracelet on her left wrist stays in place, not draw any attention to herself, and maybe—please God—make a few friends, because surely that would be a nice change of pace. The one thing she didn’t need and never planned on was capturing the attention of the one guy who could shatter the precarious future she’s building for herself.
Some things are worth experiencing…
Cameron Hamilton is six feet and three inches of swoon-worthy hotness, complete with a pair of striking blue eyes and a remarkable ability to make her want things she believed were irrevocably stolen from her. She knows she needs to stay away from him, but Cam is freaking everywhere, with his charm, his witty banter, and that damn dimple that’s just so… so lickable. Getting involved with him is dangerous, but when ignoring the simmering tension that sparks whenever they are around each other becomes impossible, he brings out a side of her she never knew existed.
Some things should never be kept quiet…
But when Avery starts receiving threatening emails and phone calls forcing her to face a past she wants silenced, she has no other choice but to acknowledge that someone is refusing to allow her to let go of that night when everything changed. When the devastating truth comes out, will she resurface this time with one less scar? And can Cam be there to help her or will he be dragged down with her?
And some things are worth fighting for…
Plot: 8/10
Characters: 10/10
Setting: 9/10
Pacing: 9/10
Style: 10/10
Cover: It fits perfectly with the story.  The boy has his eyes closed and is really into the kiss, but the girl is cautious and reserved, yet you can tell she really does want to kiss him back.  And even though there's not much color it's really pretty still.

Lately it seems New Adult books are all the same.  One character has gone through something traumatic and is in their first year of college trying to figure out life. And while that was the case for this book, it didn't feel like a recycled concept.  It felt real, like these two people Avery and Cam really existed somewhere facing these problems.  I loved the subtle message in this book that being a victim of a traumatic event and then not speaking up can not only be harmful to your mental health, but to someone else in the future.  Also, half way through it was like the author just decided to turn this into an erotica novel...not that I'll really complain about super steamy scenes with Cam.

I didn't think that Jennifer L. Armentrout could come make her male characters any hotter, but Cam seriously is the ideal male specimen.  He's deliciously hot, has perfect one liner jokes, loves his family, has a pet turtle, and is so sweet to Avery even when she's pushing him away.  He's also very realistic.  He has flaws and he struggles just like everyone else.  Oh and did I mention he can cook?  He sure loved his cookies and eggs.

Avery was frustrating because she had gone so long in life keeping to herself that she pushed everyone who cared about her away.  I found that I understood why she did what she did so I ended up liking her character.  I also thought she was a very realistic college student.  She ate tones of unhealthy food.  She hung out with friends in the cafeteria and in her apartment.  She went to a few parties and drank occasionally.  She tried on half her closet before going on a date.  I felt connected to her.  I think it was also because she was a dancer and cleaned when she was stressed (two things that I relate with).

Jacob was the stereotype gay friend that we all love.  He had funny one liners that usually had to do with how hot he thought Cam was.  He kind of reminded me of a mixture of Damian from Mean Girls and Walt from Carrie Diaries.  Brit was also a very colorful character.  She was a great friend for letting Avery know she was there for her if she needed to talk.  Yet she also had a funny side that kept the mood light throughout the book.

I love Jennifer L. Armentrout's writing so much that I bought this book without even reading the summary really.  It had been .99 on kindle the first week it was out and I missed the sale and bought it for $2.99 the other day, but guess what?  I didn't even care.  I think J.L.A. deserves the full 3 bucks.  Hell, I woulda paid $10 for it.  And that's saying a lot because I'm very picky when it comes to how I spend my money these days.  So basically what I'm saying is go get this book.  It's worth it and you'll probably read it in a day like I did.

What's Next #4

Post 3-5 books that you want to read next, but can't decide on.
Then everyone can comment on which book they think you should read next.

I had put all three of these on hold at the library and they are in today.  Since they're all kind of similar dark genres I'm not sure what I'm in the mood to start with.  Help!

Waiting On Wednesday #20

Jill from Breaking The Spine hosts this awesome meme where bloggers feature books they are eagerly anticipating to be published.

I can’t weep. I can’t fear. I’ve grown talented at pretending.

Elizabeth Caldwell doesn’t feel emotions . . . she sees them. Longing, Shame, and Courage materialize around her classmates. Fury and Resentment appear in her dysfunctional home. They’ve all given up on Elizabeth because she doesn’t succumb to their touch. All, that is, save one—Fear. He’s intrigued by her, as desperate to understand the accident that changed Elizabeth’s life as she is herself.

Elizabeth and Fear both sense that the key to her past is hidden in the dream paintings she hides in the family barn. But a shadowy menace has begun to stalk her, and try as she might, Elizabeth can barely avoid the brutality of her life long enough to uncover the truth about herself. When it matters most, will she be able to rely on Fear to save her?

It just sounds so unique.  I like the idea of Fear being a "person" and having to save her when he's supposed to be doing the opposite.  Also, look how gorgeous that cover is.  It's creepy, but the flowers making up the dress are so pretty.  Hauntingly beautiful.
