{Review} Shark Bait by Jenn Cooksey

Publication date: June 15, 2012

Rating:  4 Stars

From Goodreads:
Previously homeschooled Camie Ramsey is being shoved into the shark-infested waters of public high school, where even helium filled, penguin bespeckled arm floaties likely won’t help keep her inexperienced, fifteen-year old head above water in that rip current of hormones and emotions.

Camie’s worldly wisdom might be severely lacking (i.e., the closest she’s come to being kissed was sitting too close to the TV whilst Jake Ryan leaned in to give Samantha that fateful 16th birthday kiss), but she does understand her only hope for survival is if she’s thrown some kind of “social” life preserver before she sinks like a freaking rock. However, what will her fate be when she endeavors to flag down the only lifeguard on duty, the enormously popular and ridiculously beautiful Tristan Daniels? The most sought after and virtually most unattainable guy in school who not only makes Camie’s heart flatline on a recurring basis, he’s also the one guy who seemingly doesn’t know she exists.

Feeling like an inept piece of chum that could ultimately be swallowed by Jaws, can Camie get Tristan to rescue her from floundering in the treacherous deep, or is she destined to be Shark Bait?

Cover:  This cover's kind of plain, but I like it.  It didn't catch my eye right away, but luckily my friend convinced me to pick this one up.

My friend Angela suggested I read this book so when I saw it was only $.99 on Kindle I scooped it up.  By the way, it's still $.99 on Kindle...just sayin.

The love interest in this story, Tristan, is so real it's amazing.  I have never read a teenage boy character that is so true to how teenage boys act.  He messes up severely and then instead of groveling and begging for forgiveness...he does what a lot of guys do.  Pretends it never happens and hopes it goes away.  He also doesn't act on his interest right away.  Most guys don't make eye contact with a girl and then propose like they do in books.  Life just doesn't work that way.  So I was glad their relationship built over time.

My first thought was that if Abby and Travis from (Beautiful Disaster) met in high school, this would be how their relationship began.  Tristan is easily jealous, has lots of testosterone, and is really intense.  But unlike Travis, Tristan is not crazy...not really.  Both relationships were roller coasters though.

It was fun watching Camie and Kate scheme and find ways to bait Tristan.  Camie was such an easy character to like and relate to even though she's home schooled up until the novel starts.  Jeff, Tristan's friend, was one of my favorite characters that I've read in awhile.  He's got lots of layers.  He's a goof, but has such a good heart.  Basically, I loved all the characters though.

I kept waiting for there to be some kind of paranormal aspect to this book.  I thought Tristan was going to end up being a merman because she kept saying his eyes changed colors.  But fortunately he does not grow fins at any point.  Overall, this was a great summer read.  It's pretty fast paced, humorous, and intense.  I'd recommend it to anyone who's looking for something to bring the beach.

Once Upon A Readathon Goals and Updates!

I'm baaaaaack!  The surgery went well and I'm still recovering, but feeling great so far.  Which means I have plenty of time to read while I'm on the mend!

I'm participating in:

Goals

I want to catch up on the first fifteen chapters of Golden because it's the BookBFFs book of the month and I'm behind.  I also have been dying to read Sarah Dessen's new book so that one's a must.  And I usually finish JLA's books in a day so I thought Obsession would be a good pick for a readathon.  Also, I've been listening to The Lightening Thief audiobook while I crochet.

Updates
Monday: Today I listened up to chapter 7 in the Percy Jackson book while I finished the baby blanket I was crocheting!  I'm liking this series so far and loving the MC's voice.  Percy just arrived at Camp Halfblood so I'm excited to see what happens next.  I also read 10 chapters in Golden.  This one is really good!  I'm really liking the characters and I love the mystery in the background.

The Book BFFs hosted a challenge/giveaway today that you can see here:

Tuesday: I'm all caught up with Golden.  Just finished Chapter 15!  It's getting soooo good.  I wasn't expecting the twist.  I started The Moon and More and am loving it so far.  I was nervous because I didn't enjoy her last book as much as I wanted to, but this one has my attention from the start.

{Guest Post} Author Cheyanne Young & GIVEAWAY

Goodreads:

When Hana Fisher moves to the small town of Mixon, Texas to live with her dad, she dreads having to work at the boring pile of dirt he fondly calls a motocross track. But when she gets there, she finds the rinky-dink dirt bike track from her childhood has grown into the most respected racing track in the state.

Now popular by association, Hana endures the pain and sweat of working in the summer heat in order to fit in with a sport she’s growing to love. She gets a real family, a best friend and not just one, but two of the fastest racers trying to win her heart.

When Hana abuses her status as the track owner’s daughter to help the gorgeous Ryan Russo cheat in the biggest race of the year, she risks more than just losing her job. Every good thing in her life is at stake now- her friends, her dad’s trust, and Ash Carter- the kind-hearted racer who may not be as alluring as Ryan, but is proof that nice guys don’t always finish last.

Author of Motocross Me, Cheyanne Young, has stopped by for a guest post about how Hana Fisher spends her day on the racing track.

Having never worked at a motocross track, I had to use my imagination for Hana's job responsibilities at her dad's track. One thing I do know for sure is that waking up at the butt crack of dawn is definitely on a motocross worker's to-do list. Racers tend to arrive very early in the morning and Hana would need to be there by 6am to start signing them in. She learned a long time ago that there is no point in taking time to put on makeup or even dress nice for a day at the track. Texas summers are brutal, and all that makeup would sweat off anyway.

After signing in racers and spectators, she would need to help out in the registration booth, which is where racers sign up and pay for which race they're going to participate in. This is one of Hana's favorite responsibilities because she gets to meet and talk to the racers, namely the hot ones.

Once the races start, Hana is free to walk around and do what she wants, although at times she'll be needed for random track jobs. One of these is assembling trophies. I really wanted to include this in the book because when I was a kid, I remember going into the score tower at my local motocross track and seeing the owner sitting on the floor, looking totally bored and annoyed as he assembled dozens of trophies from boxes scattered on the floor. That's something I would never think of, and that job falls to Hana now.

When the races are over, Hana enjoys dinner with the rest of the track staff. She probably has to pick up random trash on the ground, or fix anything that's out of place. Then she goes home, goes to bed, and wakes up to do it all over again.

I don't want to give away the ending of the book, but I imagine that now Hana spends a lot of her downtime with the boy she chose. ;-) It's hard working at a motocross track, but I know she wouldn't have it any other way.

Plus she has a killer tan.

Seriously Series Update:
As of June I have only completed one series, Unearthly, but I have read a lot of sequels for series that aren't all out yet.  So that's progress.  When I signed up for this challenge I read the directions wrong.  I didn't realize the goal was to finish the series.  So I had been counting books in series that I was finishing, but now that I realized my mistake I updated everything.
