This was supposed to be the best summer of Maggie’s life. Now it’s the one she’d do anything to forget.

Maggie Reynolds remembers hanging out at the gorge with her closest friends after a blowout party the night before. She remembers climbing the trail hand in hand with her perfect boyfriend, Joey. She remembers that last kiss, soft, lingering, and meant to reassure her. So why can’t she remember what happened in the moment before they were supposed to dive? Why was she left cowering at the top of the cliff, while Joey floated in the water below—dead?

As Maggie’s memories return in snatches, nothing seems to make sense. Why was Joey acting so strangely at the party? Where did he go after taking her home? And if Joey was keeping these secrets, what else was he hiding?

The latest novel from the author of The Tension of OppositesOne Momentis a mysterious, searing look at how an instant can change everything you believe about the world around you.

Unfortunately I was really sick yesterday, but I was glad that I remembered I had One Moment on my phone.  I started reading it and was so into the book that not only did I finish it in one day, but it helped take my mind off not feeling well.  From looking at the cover I thought this book was going to be fun and light.  I was completely wrong.  It is dark and touches on some rough topics like teen death and deceitful friendships.  If you're a major fan of Sarah Dessen like I am you'd probably like this book too.  Kristina and Sarah have similar writing styles and both are not afraid to talk about difficult topics.

Maggie is pretty innocent, so when her boyfriend ends up dead her whole world is turned upside down.  This is one of the biggest things to ever happen to her.  She can't remember much after the incident which I didn't really understand how that worked.  I thought usually the person has to hit their head or something.  It reminded me of The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer where you go on the journey of figuring out what happened along with the main character.  However, I was able to figure out what lies the friends were telling and what happened the night of the incident almost right away.  I kept waiting for some twist in the plot that I wouldn't see coming, but everything was pretty predictable.  I did like how the ending was really fast paced so even though I knew what was going to happen it was interesting to see it pan out so dramatically.

Kristina McBride does a great job of making you care about the characters right off the bat.  Although, I thought Maggie was a little slow because she could not figure things out for herself...unless she was subconsciously suppressing what she really knew deep down.  Other than that I really liked Maggie's character and was routing for her to move on and be happy.  Adam is such a good friend.  I think we've all had an Adam in our lives; a friend we've taken for granted.  It was great that McBride showed how not all people cope with loss the same way.  Joey was the typical popular boy who everyone makes excuses for his bad behavior because he's good looking, charming, and popular.  Still I kinda felt bad for him even though he wasn't the greatest person.  An author that is able to make you care about the bad guy is truly gifted.

If you're looking for a quick read that'll have you contemplating life long after you've finished it then this is a great book to try.  It really makes the reader think about how one action, one moment in time, can change our lives completely.

“What if it's as simple as one moment? One tiny thing, like that kiss on the rocks? What if I'd kissed him a little longer? Would he be alive right now? Or what if I'd stayed with him Friday night, what if I'd been with him… wherever he was?”
