{Review} Break It Up by E.M. Tippetts

I did a video review of this book last week, but I figured I'd share it here and do a full review so that I have something written to put on goodreads and amazon.

Goodreads / Amazon

I'll admit, I only signed up to review this book because I liked the author's previous work and the cover caught my interest.  Who doesn't love boy bands?  But I was pleasnatly surprised when I started reading and found out it was a companion novel to the Someone Else's Fairytale books.  You don't need to have read the first two to understand this one, but I think it would help you understand where the characters are coming from if you did.

Kyra was a very refreshing character because she already knows who she is.  She goes through a change in the second book so by the time she gets to this one she's a reformed rebellious teenager and she's confident in that.  I loved that there was this underlying theme throughout the book about double standards.  Kyra is seen as promiscuous in earlier books, but when Ben does the same thing people just think he's a party boy.  And it was nice to see someone touch on that topic without making it feel preachy.

{Excerpt} The Dollhouse Asylum

Here's an excerpt from The Dollhouse Asylum which comes out October 22 and is a great creepy Halloween read.
There has never been a more evil villain than Teo.

Excerpt: Chapter One

Gruff fingers yank a blindfold off my face, light splashes into my eyes, and I blink. Gray walls swim about my head, and the ceiling soars much too high above me. I don’t know this place. I was walking to my bathroom when someone grabbed me from behind and forced a sour-smelling cloth over my face and—someone grapples with my hair, and I flinch. Who—who is touching me?
I try turning in the flimsy chair, but someone’s grabbing my shoulders, forcing me not to move. Spasms of fear shoot up and down my arms and legs. I try swinging my fists to make them loosen their grip, but my captor’s fingers only tighten.
Raising my arm to jab my captor in the gut, I pause. Someone’s laughing. How do I know that sound? It’s beautiful and low, a laugh I could recognize anywhere. Glancing around the sun-filled room, I find the source almost immediately. It’s Teo, my Teo, standing across from me on the hardwood floor, beaming at me. His ebony eyes shine forth like two onyx stones, and even his olive-toned skin makes me breathe a bit shallower. Choking back a strangled laugh—no one’s here to hurt me—I reach out for the love of my life, too tongue-tied to say anything.
His lips spread into a thin smile, reminding me of his mouth melting into my own. Fire raged beneath my skin with that kiss and it felt like I was lifted up into the air and floating. It’s been six days since our kiss and we still haven’t been able to talk about it. I tried repeatedly to go into his classroom, but it was like our school had purposely decided to schedule a more than average number of parent-teacher meetings.
Locking his eyes on mine, Teo asks, “Manicure?”
I glance down at my fingernails, trying to see why he would think I needed a manicure, when my shoulders are released and pale, icy fingers grip my hand. Chills run through me.
A flat, tenor voice says, “Yes.” And I’m startled to see my fingernails are actually painted. Clear and shiny.
The fingers drop my hand, and my captor walks around to face me. White uniform, white skin, white hair. He’s albino. Who is he?

{Guest Post} Author Cheyanne Young & GIVEAWAY

Goodreads:

When Hana Fisher moves to the small town of Mixon, Texas to live with her dad, she dreads having to work at the boring pile of dirt he fondly calls a motocross track. But when she gets there, she finds the rinky-dink dirt bike track from her childhood has grown into the most respected racing track in the state.

Now popular by association, Hana endures the pain and sweat of working in the summer heat in order to fit in with a sport she’s growing to love. She gets a real family, a best friend and not just one, but two of the fastest racers trying to win her heart.

When Hana abuses her status as the track owner’s daughter to help the gorgeous Ryan Russo cheat in the biggest race of the year, she risks more than just losing her job. Every good thing in her life is at stake now- her friends, her dad’s trust, and Ash Carter- the kind-hearted racer who may not be as alluring as Ryan, but is proof that nice guys don’t always finish last.

Author of Motocross Me, Cheyanne Young, has stopped by for a guest post about how Hana Fisher spends her day on the racing track.

Having never worked at a motocross track, I had to use my imagination for Hana's job responsibilities at her dad's track. One thing I do know for sure is that waking up at the butt crack of dawn is definitely on a motocross worker's to-do list. Racers tend to arrive very early in the morning and Hana would need to be there by 6am to start signing them in. She learned a long time ago that there is no point in taking time to put on makeup or even dress nice for a day at the track. Texas summers are brutal, and all that makeup would sweat off anyway.

After signing in racers and spectators, she would need to help out in the registration booth, which is where racers sign up and pay for which race they're going to participate in. This is one of Hana's favorite responsibilities because she gets to meet and talk to the racers, namely the hot ones.

Once the races start, Hana is free to walk around and do what she wants, although at times she'll be needed for random track jobs. One of these is assembling trophies. I really wanted to include this in the book because when I was a kid, I remember going into the score tower at my local motocross track and seeing the owner sitting on the floor, looking totally bored and annoyed as he assembled dozens of trophies from boxes scattered on the floor. That's something I would never think of, and that job falls to Hana now.

When the races are over, Hana enjoys dinner with the rest of the track staff. She probably has to pick up random trash on the ground, or fix anything that's out of place. Then she goes home, goes to bed, and wakes up to do it all over again.

I don't want to give away the ending of the book, but I imagine that now Hana spends a lot of her downtime with the boy she chose. ;-) It's hard working at a motocross track, but I know she wouldn't have it any other way.

Plus she has a killer tan.

She’s been six different people in six different places: Madeline in Ohio, Isabelle in Missouri, Olivia in Kentucky . . . But now that she’s been transplanted to rural Louisiana, she has decided that this fake identity will be her last.

Witness Protection has taken nearly everything from her. But for now, they’ve given her a new name, Megan Rose Jones, and a horrible hair color. For the past eight months, Meg has begged her father to answer one question: What on earth did he do – or see – that landed them in this god-awful mess? Meg has just about had it with all the Suits’ rules — and her dad’s silence. If he won’t help, it’s time she got some answers for herself.

But Meg isn’t counting on Ethan Landry, an adorable Louisiana farm boy who’s too smart for his own good. He knows Meg is hiding something big. And it just might get both of them killed. As they embark on a perilous journey to free her family once and for all, Meg discovers that there’s only one rule that really matters — survival.

The Rules For Disappearing had gotten some iffy reviews making me very wary going into it.  I'm so glad I decided to read it anyway because I really liked it.  I read it on my phone while waiting in line at Whole Foods because I needed to know the ending right then and there that's how good it was.

I do, however, advise you to go into it accepting that it is a fictitious story and therefore not really realistic at times.  Because let's be honest...a teenage girl can not solve a crime better than the FBI or do half the stuff she did.  And most teenage girls would be more scared of the situation than Meg was.  But I put all of that aside and was able to enjoy the suspenseful thriller of a story that it was.  It was a tad predictable, but that didn't really make a difference to me since I haven't read many books in this genre and also it read more like a contemporary at times.

Ethan was so swoon-worthy.  At first he's described as wearing camo and caked in mud and I was like, "um no thanks".  But he really proves to be such a sweet guy...think Tucker from Unearthly.  I was rooting for him the whole time.  There are not many guys in YA like him that are just so sweet and realistic to an actual teenage boy.

If you liked stories like One Moment or Ten then you should try this one.  They have similar elements.  Don't let the bad reviews discourage you.  Decide for yourself like I did!  You might be surprised.  Don't forget to check out my playlist and enter the rafflecopter below!
Playlist:
I just picked three songs to analyze, but there are more on the YouTube Playlist

1. What's It Feel Like to be a Ghost Taking Back Sunday

What's it feel like to be a ghost?
Meg is basically a ghost.  She disappears every time the FBI moves her family whiteout getting a chance to say goodbye to her friends.

Are you up for, are you up for this?
This is her forth move in a few months and this time she doesn't want to make friends or join clubs.  But it's harder than it sounds to do that.

I look so close but it's been months who knows if I
will get this right...
look so closely, there might be something you'd like
What was it like?
She's been trying to figure out why her family is in this predicament for awhile and she's having a hard time with her plan of not making friends.  Especially with Ethan, the swoon worthy guy at her school.

2. We Are Broken Paramore

I am outside

And I've been waiting for the sun
With my wide eyes
I've seen worlds that don't belong
My mouth is dry with words I cannot verbalize
Tell me why we live like this
Keep me safe inside
Your arms like towers
Tower over me
This is my pick for Teeny (Meg's sister) and Meg's relationship.  Meg tries to shelter her sister from what's going on, but her younger sister isn't stupid.

Yeah

'Cause we are broken
What must we do to restore
Our innocence
And oh, the promise we adored
Give us life again
'Cause we just wanna be whole
They both had to grow up really fast and mature.  They just want their old lives back though.

3. Arms Christina Perri

You put your arms around me

And I believe that it's easier for you to let me go
You put your arms around me and I'm home

Ethan makes Meg feel safe.  But there's always the chance that she'll have to be relocated and he'll never know where she went.  She'd never be able to get over that, but he'd eventually move on.

How many times will you let me change my mind and turn around?
I can't decide if I'll let you save my life or if I'll drown
She's very hot and cold to him because she doesn't want to get close to him, but can't help falling.  He lets her be hot and cold while she figures things out.

I hope that you see right through my walls

I hope that you catch me 'cause I'm already falling
I'll never let a love get so close
You put your arms around me and I'm home
But secretly she wants to tell him everything.

The world is coming down on me and I can't find a reason to be loved

I never wanna leave you but I can't make you bleed if I'm alone

Dear Teen Me Blog Tour Stop

My Mini Review: Where was this book when I was a teen?!  I was excited to read this because it sounded like fun to read author's embarrassing teen moments, but it turned out to be much more than that.  In pretty much every single letter I was able to relate to the author in some way.  I think it's safe to say that during our teen years we think we're all alone in our awkwardness and insecurities, but after reading this book I started to realize that we all go through the same thing.  Just no one ever really talks about it.  I'm interested to see how this book will effect teens today.  I hope it becomes more popular than the blogging world and expands to best seller status.  It has the potential to help a lot of people.  Read more about it here.

My Deer Teen Me Letter:

Dear Teen Me,

You probably just got home from hours of dance, work, and whatever other clubs you decided to join this year.  You're probably curled up on the couch in the tights and leotard you practically live in.  I bet you're on myspace...maybe even watching The O.C., doing homework, and IMing with friends.  Sorry to ruin your night, but I've got bad news.   What I'm about to tell you might come as a shock.

Everything you think your future will be will turn out completely different.

1.Friends Forever: You'll lose touch with all your best guy friends from high school and join a sorority (I know that's crazy!).  You'll even stop talking to your best friend for about a year.  But when the time is right you'll reunite and be closer than ever.

2. Dance Forever: After freshman year of college you'll quit your dance major.  Don't join the dance club though.  You'll regret doing that god awful "jazz" routine to My Girl for years to come.  You'll find Zumba a few years later and discover your love for dance again.

3. Teach Forever: After dreaming of being an elementary teacher since you were three, you'll finally get your degree in teaching!   And then decide that's not for you after all.  You'll even make some stupid decisions while you try to figure out your life and you'll have to pay the price.

4. Be Single Forever:  Here's some good news finally.  Although you probably don't believe it now you won't be doomed to date horrible guys forever.  You'll find someone awesome in college.  Don't run away from this relationship when things get tough.  You'll waste two years separated when you'll just get back together eventually.

5. Live in Jersey Forever:  Even though right now you're confident you will always live in the same town as your family, you'll eventually swallow your fear and get on a plane to visit Europe.  This experience will cause you to vow that at some point in your life you'll move to another state and/or travel the world.

Basically what I'm trying to say is: stop planning your whole life out because you are wasting time worrying and not enjoying your teen years enough.  Joining a million clubs so your college application looks good will not do you any good.  Working at a bagel store before dance class will not make you rich.  Trying to fit in with the mean girls at dance will not make you happy.  All these things will do are cause gray hairs and ulcers.

Also, welcome change.  Change is not this scary thing you make it out to be.  It'll be essential for you to find who you are and be comfortable with yourself.  Some of the best experiences you'll have will be when you take risks and put yourself out there.  Just enjoy the ride and let your hair down once in awhile.  Oh and speaking of hair, buy a straightener and curling iron sooner rather than later.  Your welcome.

{Blog Tour Stop Review} Show Biz by Ruby Preston

Title: Show Biz
Author: Ruby Preston
Number of Pgs. 242 paperback
Publication date: April 16, 2012

Genre: Adult Fiction
How I got the copy: Received a copy from author in exchange for an honest review and a stop on the Blog Tour.

From Amazon:

After four years in Manhattan, slaving away as the under-appreciated apprentice to the brilliant, but ruthless "King of Broadway," Scarlet Savoy is finally on hr way to becoming a Broadway producer in her own right.  A chance meeting with an influential gossip columnist sparks romance- but can he be trusted?  A shocking suicide turns Broadway on its head and Scarlett finds herself at the center of the storm as everything she thought she knew about the business of Broadway begins to unravel.

I've been using a new way of reviewing that I saw over at Making the Grade.  It breaks the book down and makes it easier to rate.  The way it works is each category gets a score out of ten points.  Then you add them all up + 50 (50% automatically for each book) and that's your score out of 100.

Plot 8/10: I love musicals so I jumped at the chance to read anything relating to broadway...and the fact that it was about a producer made me even more excited.  I was not disappointed.  I loved seeing all the behind the scenes of how a show is made from getting a composer to investors.  And on top of all that there is a suicide and a scam going on to make the plot a little thicker!  The budding romance also added more to the drama.  I'm not sure if I just don't enjoy Adult Fiction as much anymore or what, but it was a little hard for me to get into in the beginning.  Once the drama started to unfold, but I was hooked.  And the ending had me giggling.

Characters 8/10: Scarlett is so different than any other Chick Lit main character I've ever read.  She's worked her way up to the top and is really strong, but still breaks down easily.  She's got game in her Zebra jacket!  I loved Reilly's character.  He's a charmer compared to her other "love interest" who is really old.  Scarlett's boss Margolies really bothered me.  That was probably the point, but I just wanted to slap him!  The two Jeremey's, Scarlett's friends and business partners, where definitely the comedic relief.

Setting 9/10: New York is an amazing place.  Most of the book takes place in offices, restaurants, apartments, but I still got a feel for the area.  And the parts where they're working on the show we get to see all the behind the scenes action.  I wish we could have seen more of New York though.

Pacing 8/10: It was a little slow at first.  I like books that start out with action of some sort, but I understand that it was important for us to see Scarlett's life before it got crazy.  I will admit that the first page caught my attention though, but it wasn't until things started getting heated the pacing really sped up.

Style 10/10: I loved that each chapter was a scene.  It fit with the book and they were short enough that I could read a few scenes here and there when I had time (because my OCD won't let me put a book down when I'm in the middle of a chapter).  It is in different point of views which really enhanced the story since we got to see different sides of the story and we could understand character's motives better.

Final Thoughts: If you're a Chick Lit lover and enjoy Broadway you won't want to pass this one up!  It's got drama, comedy, romance, and mystery.
Total: 93/100

{Guest Post} Blog Tour Stop: Show Biz by Ruby Preston

These past few days have been crazy.  I started a new job last week.  Then yesterday I spent the night in the hospital.  My dad thinks I'm allergic to work lol.  But really it's just a hurniated disc that's pushing on a nerve making my arm and leg numb and swell.  Or so the doctors think, but they're not sure.  So if I disappear again I'm at the doctors.  And that's why this post is late and the review will be even later.  I'm doing better now so hopefully I can blog more this week.

Now, please let me introduce Ruby Preston, the author of Showbiz!  She has kindly agreed to stop by and do a guest post so you can learn a little about her and her new book which focuses on the behind the scenes of Broadway!

From Showtunes To SHOWBIZ
By Ruby Preston

To say that my personal experiences as a Broadway producer have inspired SHOWBIZ would be the understatement of the century. In fact, it was entirely thanks to my crazy experiences - and a few clever friends who suggested over drinks one night that I put my stories down in writing - that my heroine Scarlett Savoy and this whole novel came about!

If you want my juiciest stories, you’ll have to read SHOWBIZ. But let’s just say that show business is riddled with contrasts. From rehearsals in rat infested basements to red carpets and paparazzi. From meetings where the agenda items include discussing a $10 million dollar budget followed by what kind of “look” we want for a fairy godmother in Act 2. And keep in mind that most of these meetings are populated by men in ties discussing said fairy godmothers. Can you picture it?

In these meetings, each decision can feel like it’s make or break, risky, high stakes. And yet, when you take a step back, you can’t help but smile at the subject matter. It’s a crazy business.

Despite the myriad challenges I’ve faced as a young producer, there’s no arguing the fact that I feel lucky every day to work in a business where the shows I produce can have such a vital impact on people. Theater speaks to audiences deeply and can change lives.

Many of you reading this may have been personally affected by live theater. Maybe it was the first time you saw Les Miz orPhantom or Wicked. There’s no doubt that what happens on stage transcends our daily lives. But, as you’ll learn in Showbiz, A Novel that path to Broadway may not be what you think.

I agree that broadway definitely affects us all.  My personal favorites were Rent, Chicago, and Mary Popins!  If anyone is interested in learning more about the author, her book, or if you just want to connect with her online, read below!  Thank you Ruby for stopping by today and sharing some fun experiences you've had.  I think it is so awesome that you've had experience in the show business and have decided to share it with us!

Guest Post & Giveaway: Susan Dennard

I'm so excited to welcome Susan Dennard, author of Something Strange and Deadly, to Harley Bear Book Blog!  Thank you Susan for taking time out of your busy schedule to do a guest post!

On this blog tour stop, she will be telling us a little about the main characters in her book and what they wore.  Something Strange and Deadly takes place in 1876 so fashion showed your social status and gender.

I wish I had seen this post before I read the book so I could picture the characters even more clearly.  If you want to see what I thought about the book my review can be found here.  Don't forget to scroll down and enter the GIVEAWAY!

One of the most fun things to research for Something Strange and Deadly was the fashion--at least for
Eleanor. Men's fashion in Victorian days was rather drab. Frock coats, top hats, and a nice tie--boooring.

Fortunately, my three main characters in men's garb are so different, they demand different styles. For Joseph
Boyer--leader of the Spirit-Hunters and son of a plantation owner--only the finest, most elegant clothes will do.
And, as a young gentleman, he would never leave home without his top hat, nor would
he EVER be seen without his gloves. He's a firm believer in cleanliness being next to godliness.

Jie Chen, the Spirit-Hunters' "muscle", said good-bye to Chinese garb in favor of an
American boy's fashion. Trousers, a waist coat--or more often, just suspenders--and a bright red tie leave this brawl-loving character happy...and more importantly, mobile enough to knock skulls when needed.

In fact, the only thing still Chinese about Jie--other than the lovely facial structure, of
course--is the Manchu Queue, which was required for all Chinese men (punishable by death!) and leaves the front
half of the head bald with a long braid behind.

As for Daniel Sheridan--the inventor for the Spirit-Hunters'--fashion is about as important
to him as...well, snowfall in Antarctica (not at all, in other words). That said, he does care what people
think of him, so he's been known to clean up on occasion. But, when it comes to working in the lab, he's most
comfortable in loose trousers and a baggy white shirt--collar scandalously unbuttoned at the top and hands
glove-free (gasp!).
Oh, and we can't forget his flat cap--which he never leaves the lab without. I imagine it
looking exactly like this:
Daniel would NEVER be seen in public without it...at least not in book 1. In A
Darkness Strange and Lovely
, well...let's just say, things change.
Finally, we have the heroine of the story, Miss Eleanor Fitt of the
Philadelphia Fitts. Though she was born into privilege, her family has fallen on some seriously hard times. No more
new wardrobe each season; no more scouring the pages of Godey's and Harper's
Bazaar
for a new walking gown; and no more worrying about which parasol would look best with which hat.
I had so much fun finding somewhat plain--though still stunning--gowns for
Eleanor since she needs things that will stay as timeless as she can make them. Even though she may
not care about fashion, her Mama does as well as all the people in her social circle. When the book opens, she's
wears something like:
And then later on, she gets to dress up all fancy like this:
But by the end of the book, Eleanor has pretty much taken to no corsets...and no skirts
even! (It's not like it's easy to fight the dead in layers of petticoats and bustle!) Yet, by the end of the
trilogy, Eleanor has gone back to skirts because--despite her love of mobility--she's still a curvy young woman and proud of it. I imagine her dressing in something of her own design, similar to this image by anndr on Deviantart:
Oh, and let's not forget her parasol--the perfect protection against the sun
and zombies! As Jie teaches her, Aim for the Knees!

You tell me:
What do you think of Victorian fashion? Are you a
fan of all the ladies' frills or more into the simplicity of men's clothes?

I love dresses and am glad that girls are starting to wear them again.  Not sure if I'd like to wear one with all the frills every day though.  I don't like corsets so I would probably be like Eleanor and complain about it all the time.  The men's clothes are nice.  Daniel's hat reminds me of what Noah (Ryan Gosling) wears in The Notebook lol so of course I like that!  What do you guys think?

Susan, thank you again for stopping by!
I can't wait to find out what happens next for the spirit hunters in book 2!
